As a kid, I remember being very confused about getting to heaven. I thought I had to be good, do all the right things and not do the wrong things. Then I heard John 3:16 that said if I believe in Jesus I would have eternal life. I was confused, do I believe or do I have to be good? How good do I have to be? If I tell a lie, will I still go to Heaven? It didn’t make sense.
I remember listening to the pastor talk about trusting Jesus and being forgiven of sins. All of the sudden things just came together for me and I understood, it’s not about what I do, it’s about what Jesus did for me. If I ask Jesus to forgive me, He will and I can be with Him in Heaven. That Sunday, I prayed and asked Jesus to come into my heart and forgive me of my sins.
I can’t say that I have never had struggles with trying to be good enough, but since coming to know Christ, I understand I already am. Jesus forgave me, and when God looks at me, He sees Jesus in me. I don’t have to earn God’s love. As a result, I am free to serve Jesus and to seek after God. I don’t have to work for God so He will love me. I work for God because He loves me already; I want to serve Him because of what He did for me. It’s true freedom.
