I was raised as a Roman Catholic until the age of eight when my parents separated and I went to live with relatives and eventually with my grandparents. At the age of 12 my parents reconciled and I attended the Belaire Baptist Church, in Houston, TX. From that point until I was twenty I thought I was saved because I was baptized at age twelve.
But at the age of 20 my grandmother asked my cousin and me to attend church with her and we said yes. Then the pastor looked at my first cousin and said, “Boy I better see you here more often, I don’t want to preach your funeral. Two weeks later my cousin was killed in an auto accident. With this event God got my attention. I began to ask the question, is my cousin in heaven or hell? Then I began to ask the question where am I going when I die?
On Sunday I finally accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior . There was such a radical change in my life. I began to pray, read my Bible and follow my pastor everywhere. My pastor asked me to fill the pulpit for him on a Sunday evening. I began to give excuses. He responded with “if you will let the Holy Spirit use you, He will.” So I agreed to do what he asked. As a result I realized God was calling me to preach. I surrendered at the close of the invitation that same night.
