I had gone to church most of my life. I knew all of the Bible stories, knew that Jesus was God’s Son, and knew that he died on the cross for my sin. I knew all of the Christian code words. And while knowing all of that I still did not know the Christ that saves.
At 18 I left home, married, and joined the military. By 23 we had 2 girls, life was good. I figured I was as good as anybody else and didn’t think I needed to waste my time in a church. The Sunday my life changed was at a conference. The speaker talked about the difference in the apostles after their encounter with the resurrected Savior. That day I asked God to make it real for me. God showed me how much I needed him. Knowing about him was not enough.
We started to attend a church and learn more about a relationship. I learned faith is a relationship with the one true God. Faith takes work like all relationships. It is not always easy, and often I stumble and fall. But Christ is a true friend one that has never left me no matter how much I mess up. I have learned that no matter what I do it can never be good enough, but Christ is, and he loves me so much that he gave his life in place of mine.
