My family never attended church. My only recollection of any kind of religious experience was when I attended a Vacation Bible School as a young boy. I began drinking alcohol at a very early age and progressed to drugs in my teen years. During those years that drugs, sex and rock-n-roll were the places that I looked to for meaning and purpose. My life was empty and I was trying to fill that void with anything and everything I could. That search ended with me in jail facing 2 years to life for drug related charges.
While in jail I came to the realization that my life was a hopeless mess. I understood then that all the free love, sex and drugs came with an enormous cost. It was at that point I surrendered my life to Jesus and asked Him to become my only Lord and Savior. As I turned from myself and sin, at that very moment He came into my life, forgiving me of my sin and giving me eternal life. My life was changed forever.
The peace and fulfillment for which I had been longing and looking for was a living reality in my life. It was during my days in jail that I heard and responded to God’s voice as He called me to preach and proclaim God’s Word to any and all who would listen. Each night when I lay my head on my pillow I sense the ever abiding peace and presence of God and know that this is truly a wonderful life and when it is over I will spend eternity in His presence in heaven.
